Testing & documentation of safety-related pressure sensitive mat in car seats

The vision system ZU-Vision is used to detect the X and Y position as well as height and angle of car co-driver seat surfaces.
The seats contain a pressure-sensitive mat (OC3) with multiple pressure sensors that represent a security feature in the deployment of the airbags.
For this reason, the functionality of the sensors contained in the seat has to be checked after the complete production and covering the seats with leather or fabric.


For this purpose, a certain force is applied by a plunger to the pressure sensors on predefined locations on the seat.
Due to the numerous motor setting options of the seats, a defined seating position is not observed.
There are a large numbers of different designs of the different types of seats and a very large number of different seat colors and color blends.
Therefore the seating position in the X and Y position, and the seat height and seat tilt have to be determined to lead the inspection stamp on the exact test position.
The vision system uses three laser lines projected to the seating surface from defined angles.


Using the laser lines and the corresponding seams on the seat surface, the XY position, the tilt and height position of a teched feature on the seat is determined and communicated on to the test device.
In order to be as independent as possible of the various fabric and leather colors, laser lines and special lens filters are used.
By appropriate calibration between vision system and test machine it is possible to teach in the test positions for the plunger directly in the vision system software.
To this end, only certain zero-points on the seat must be known to be used by the test system and the image processing together.
Up to three pressure test positions It can be taught directly in the vision system.

The corresponding coordinates and the status of "checkpoint found" or "not found" are via a serial interface to the test system.
In case of an unrecognized seat, it is possible to enter five points manually to perform the fit test anyway.
This is necessary because due to the special upholstery combinations can occur that could not be learned in advance.
